We put a lot of trust in social media. The truth is we have to in order to stay connected and #relevant in 2012. Even if we think about the potential dangers and repercussions that are involved with what we put out onto the web, there is really very little we can do. Our choices are either: completely alienate ourselves from all social media and the internet, rendering ourselves disconnected from most of life, or we have to accept that as a society we are owned by the social media we use.

Matt Buchanan wrote in this Buzzfeed article, “If you are not paying for it, you’re not the customer; you’re the product being sold.” Instagram will change its privacy policy on January 16 to allow the sale of all your information (including photos, names, likes, etc.) to advertisers and such. But there really isn’t any reason to be super enraged or surprised by this. Facebook already does this and most people have no problem telling Facebook everything about themselves.
